Research indicates “Protecting 1.2% of Earth would prevent most extinctions.”
“Conservation Imperatives” identifies 164 million hectares, or 1.2% of the Earth’s land surface, crucial to conserve for rare and threatened species. With a focus on bringing this paper into tangible form, we present “Conserve,” a global initiative to secure long-term habitat protection for all species. Connecting, involving, participating, and funding grants for new Permanent Protected Areas, the aim of this initiative is to support all GSNi rarity sites moving into protection by the year 2030.
The related grantmaking involves designating permanent conservation protection and rights for Indigenous Peoples, government-protected areas, with a focus on areas of high biodiversity and betadiversity. This website connects donors with conservation partners for funding the designation of new permanent protected areas. From 2018 to 2023, under 10% of expanded protected areas sheltered range-limited, threatened species. It is time to protect rare species.
